33 years of Black Party posters were on exhibit last night at the Art+Sin event hosted by the LGBT Center NYC. There were some very provocative and lovely designs over the years, but I think this year’s poster with the Japanese rope bondage photo is especially beautiful (photo below courtesy of Black Party blog).
Drawing Circle sponsored by the Leslie-Lohman Studio. About 18 artists were seated around the small stage, cordoned off by velvet ropes in the center of the large room. Around us was the crowd of people who came to see the posters and the live drawing session – I guess we were the entertainment for the evening. From an artist’s point of view, you had to embrace your inner exhibitionist and perform under the pressure of knowing everyone was watching. Joe Z was the hunky model (related post Hairy Hunk Joe) and he posed nude, standard for our private drawing sessions but unusual for a large event. Given the community center venue, the poses were art school rather than erotic. I thought Joe looked like a rugby player so I titled these the Rugger Man series (4 paintings below).
Oh, and since I was already at the Center, I visited the newly restored Keith Haring Bathroom, which will be my next post.
Thanks to Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art for its continuing support of gay artists and the Leslie-Lohman Studio! Thank you Frank Sheehan for organizing the Drawing Circle and thanks to Yojani at the LGBT Center for having us! And very nice meeting the guys from the Black Party!
